Flintshire Disability Action History

 

 

photo of Helen CooksonThe Disability Action Centre operated in Mill Lane, Buckley, Flintshire from 1993 to 1998.

The centre was started by Clwyd County Council Social Services working with local people with physical disabilities and sensory impairments. The government Welsh Office paid half the running costs for the first few years.

Three full time paid staff, helped by a team of volunteers with disabilities, ran a disability information and advice service dealing with 4,000 enquiries a year.

In 1996 the centre was taken over by Flintshire County Council following local government reorganisation in Wales.

In 1998 the staff, Ian Jones, Wendy Jones and David N Jones, were moved to Ty'r Binwydden in Clayton Road, Mold and the Action Centre in Buckley was closed.

In 1999 Ian Jones was transferred to work in County Hall, Mold where he stayed until 2002 when he left for a new job in the Wirral.

The staff continued their work as Flintshire Disability Action until 2002 when their disability information role was taken over by the Flintshire Disability Forum Charity.

The remaining Disability Action staff, Wendy Jones & David N Jones, transferred to working as the Public Information Unit of the Flintshire County Council Directorate of Adult Social Care.

wpe4.gif (11747 bytes)The Action Centre volunteers formed a voluntary organisation in 1994 called DisAware which ran the Centre in partnership with the Council. DisAware also organised disability awareness training until they disbanded in 1999.
